Nonstop!
Nonstop action, that pretty much describes my two little loves these days. Brad went away this weekend to a football game so it was just the three of us. Wow, am I exhausted! Running after these two all weekend long and being outnumbered sure was tiring, but we did have a lot of fun, and some memorable moments...
To get out of the house I took Jack and Madelynn to an indoor play area with foam play structures. They were so happy, they were giggling and grinning as they explored Munchkin Playland. They would chase each other all over and climb in/over and up anything they could get a hold of. Jack quickly spotted an older baby, about 16 months old and decided he could do anything and everything that baby was doing...and he practically could! I am constantly amazed at how darn smart that little guy is.
Both babies learned how to drink from a straw this weekend--it is so cute to watch them. Jack has taken several steps too, 3 or 4 a day before he gets overly excited and topples over. Maddy still has no interest, but just wait until Jack starts walking and then she will join him in no time.
Our only mishap this weekend was that Jack got his first taste of dog food. He has been obsessed with the dog food and water dish from the very beginning. While I was trying to get them in the car, running back and forth from the car to their playroom that is completely baby proofed, I accidentally left the gate open and while I was putting Maddy in the car Jack quickly crawled out of his room, over to the dog water (which I had just filled), spilled it all over the kitchen floor and himself, then when I returned 15 seconds later he had fist fulls of dog food. I found a bunch in his mouth and tried to get them all out but I'm sure a few must have slipped down his throat. It was one of those laughing and crying at the same time moments. He was fine though. Must not have tasted too bad because he tried to do it again the next day!

11 months
Another month has come and gone and Jack and Maddy are now 11 months old. This time of year has brought on a mix of emotions as I remember what we were going through last October. October 5th was the day I was first admitted to the hospital in preterm labor and spent several uncomfortable nights in the hospital on IV magnesium. For anyone who has been on IV magnesium, there is no explanation needed. For those who have not—it makes you feel hot, itchy, nauseous, and a little absent. On top of that, I wasn’t able to eat or drink because both babies were breach and if they would need to be delivered it would have to be by C-section. So I was also starving, and thirsty. The twins had to be monitored constantly, so I needed to lay on my back with monitors strapped around my stomach. There are two problems with this scenario—any pregnant woman will understand that laying on your back while you have a giant stomach is VERY uncomfortable (feels like you are suffocating). The other thing is that attaching two flat monitors to a round stomach does not work well either—they were constantly falling off the monitor which meant I had a nurse entering my room every 5-10 minutes to put them back on. I wasn’t getting much sleep to begin with, but this sealed the deal. This was how we spent Brad's birthday last year!
Despite their complicated pregnancy and birth story Jack and Madelynn have more than made up for their early entrance into the world. They are growing, they are healthy, they are happy and they are thriving.
The past several weeks they have both started to stand on their own briefly, they continue to babble and say “mama,” “ba ba,” and “da.” They play with each other—chasing each other all over their play room laughing and giggling. They are continuously getting more teeth. Jack now has four top teeth in addition to his two bottom teeth. Maddy has her top two and bottom two and is working on two more top teeth and one more bottom tooth. They have started to cling to our legs and try to climb up them when they want to be held. They have started to become more interested in their books and pointing at things. Maddy can recognize pictures of things and point to them in books. Jack really likes his “touch and feel” books where he can pet the animals and feel the wheels on the cars.

10 months!
We are getting so close now to Jack and Maddy's first birthday...it is a little bittersweet. The greatest joy of my life has been watching these two grow and learn new things. They are becoming such fun little people. It is hard not to get a little sad thinking about how quickly time passes by. It has by far been the most intense year of our lives. Now is the point when everyone has started asking...when are you going to have another baby? Not any time soon, people! We still have our hands completely full keeping up with these two.
Jack and Maddy are moving all over the place. They both crawl so much they have little rugburns on their knees! They pull up on anything and can stand on their own with just one hand on the wall to balance them. They have also figured out how to safely get down when they get up...bending their knees and sitting down rather then just simply toppling over. They follow each other around everywhere, it is so sweet. They share (or they don't share, sometimes) their toys with each other. They smile and giggle at each other. Those are the moments I realize how truly blessed we are to have two at once. They entertain each other and the friendship and bond they are forming now before our very eyes will last their lifetime. Whenever one starts doing something, we know it is only a matter of time before the other one starts doing it as well.
Just this week their verbal skills have started to take off. Maddy started shouting (very loudly) "babababababababab" two days later Jack chimed in. So sweet to hear their little voices together. My favorite time of day is when they first wake up, they sit or stand in their cribs facing each other and have a little conversation. If we leave them alone they will talk to each other for 30 minutes or more! Another fun time is coming home from work and seeing their beaming smiles when they see me. They both crawl right over and try to climb each of my legs. On my Fridays home with them and the weekends I relish all of my time with them. They love walking to the park and swinging, swimming in their pool, riding in the cart at the grocery store. They love their puppy, and have quickly learned how to sneak her snacks from their highchair. They are getting so good at finger foods and can feed themselves peas, cheerios, pieces of fruit or other veggies, cheese, beans, and scrambled egg yolks. They are still the greatest little eaters. Their new favorite food is the lasagna I made for them last weekend--good thing they loved it because it took forever to make!
